Know Like a Pro: Terence Conran

What’s he famous for…

Picture this… You wake up in your Conran & Partners designed apartment, throw aside you Conran duvet cover and use your Conran towel to shower, with your Conran soap no less. You eat breakfast in your Conran Arc chair (£1399). At work, you put on your Conran specs and plan for a business lunch at Quaglino’s (Conran, of course). Back home, you’re stuck for a dinner recipe and pull out Classic Conran (£16.99, Conran Octopus Ltd) to find a recipe. You settle on something that looks fancy and you’ll probably use half the kitchen, but thanks to your bY Range (by Conran, for Sainsburys), you’ve got it covered. You serve up on crockery designed by Conran for Royal Doulton. Another day done, you get tucked in and switch off your Conran Stem lamp. Is this some freaky Conran parallel universe you ask? Hardly, dear friends. Welcome to the world of Sir Terence, where no stone is left unturned.

Keep a lookout for…

Conran’s design career began with a small restaurant called Soup Kitchen and later, he opened the first Habitat store on the Fulham Road in 1964. By 1973 there were 18 Habitats across the country and the first Conran Shop was opened. His style has been credited for shaping middle-class interiors of the 60s and 70s and he literally shaped contemporary ‘lifestyle’ as we know it. In 1974, Conran’s first House Book was published, and it has since become a trusty reference for anyone with an interest in design. His name is now attached to umpteen interiors products, restaurants, books and architectural designs. His Matador chair (£795.00), part of the Content for Conran collection, seeks to bring quality, affordable designs to the masses.
Insider fact

Entrepreneurial skills came early to Conran. As a boy, he cottoned on quick to the market of girls toys, selling dolls house furniture to his sister’s friends. Bless.
Sentence to drop in at a dinner party?

In the religion of solid British design, Sir Terence is certainly at the top of the holy ones. He says of his industry, ‘Perhaps believing in good design is like believing in God, it makes you an optimist.’

Recession-Time Furniture Organic and Recycled

According to the LA Times, the rich and the famous have shown a growing tendency towards buying modest-looking furniture in recent months, even if the price tags remain anything but.

With the increased focus on climate change that has dominated so much of world politics this year, shabby-chic with an eco bent is finding favour among those who would have previously subscribed to minimalist extravagance and Hollywood glamour.

The desire for such styles has permeated through all levels of interior design and can be seen on display in public spaces such as the Rough Luxe hotel in London.

People attempting to immerse themselves in similar surroundings can find plenty of affordable inspiration for their own home. However, many converts to ‘recession chic’ in the US are happy to pay hundreds of dollars for ‘humble’ looking pillow cases and thousands for roughly upholstered sofas.

Representing a desire to capture the unspoilt rural charm of the countryside, shabby-chic design is not new but it has definitely come to the fore since financial and environmental concerns began rising up most people’s agendas.

Modern furniture refers to furniture produced from the late 19th century through the present that is influenced by modernism. It was a tremendous departure from all furniture design that had gone before it. Dark or gilded carved wood and richly patterned fabrics gave way to the glittering simplicity and geometry of polished metal. The forms of furniture evolved from visually heavy to visually light.

Prior to the modernist design movement there was an emphasis on furniture as ornament, the length of time a piece took to create was often a measure of its value and desirability. During the first half of the 20th Century a new philosophy emerged shifting the emphasis to function and accessibility. Western design generally, whether architectural or design of furniture had for millennia sought to convey an idea of lineage, a connection with tradition and history. The modern movement sought newness, originality, technical innovation, and ultimately the message that it conveyed spoke of the present and the future, rather than of what had gone before it.

Modernist design seems to have evolved out of a combination of influences: Technically innovative materials and manufacturing methods, the new philosophies that emerged from the Werkbund and the Bauhaus School, from exotic foreign influences, from Art Nouveau and from the tremendous creativity of the artists and designers of that era.

Today contemporary furniture designers and manufacturers continue to evolve design. Still seeking new materials, with which to produce unique forms, still employing simplicity and lightness of form, in preference to heavy ornament. And most of all they are still endeavoring to step beyond what has gone before to create entirely new visual experiences for us.

The designs that prompted this paradigm shift were produced in the middle of the 20th century, most of them well before 1960. And yet they are still regarded internationally as symbols of the modern age, the present and perhaps even the future. Modern Classic Furniture became an icon of elegance and sophistication.

How to Decorate With Yellow

Yellow (specifically ‘mimosa’ – an orange-hued, warm shade) has been declared thecolour of 2009 by Pantone, the global provider of professional colour standards to the design industries. Find out how to decorate with this season’s hottest hue.

1. Come out of the shadows

Everyone has dark areas in their home, especially if a room lacks natural light or is north-facing. Think of yellow as ‘sunshine in a paint tin’, says interiors author Stephanie Hoppen. But take heed; too much of the yolk hue can be nausea-inducing and irritating so opt for ‘soft, gentle shades of sand, maize, hay and straw for larger areas.

2. Build me up, buttercup

Thanks to the Darwin hype, nature is a hot trend right now. Kill two birds with one stone this season with a yellow floral print like Wolcott Wallpaper (£22) from Laura Ashley. Balance with a neutral shade in sand, white or cream on the other walls. To avoid a sickly feel, follow interior designer Kelly Hoppen advice that ‘the pinkiness of taupe’ clashes with yellow tones.

3. Lighten up

‘The color yellow exemplifies the warmth and nurturing quality of the sun, properties we as humans are naturally drawn to for reassurance,’ explains Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute. Go the whole hog with this Oswald Armchair in Hakon Yellow Velvet (£2,885) from The Conran Shop for a good mood home.

4. Grown-up yellow

Yellow doesn’t have to be garish. ‘Warmer golds and tans bring the natural world inside to create a look of comforting and calming radiance’ says Dulex. For grandiose gold, check out the Raj furniture range by Homescapes, available from Amazon. Or for more subtle tans, try these Lintel Dining Chairs (£99 each) from John Lewis. This trend ‘evokes vintage glamour’ says Anderson.

5. How to use neon

Feeling brave? Make a style statement with edgy yellow retro pieces. Funk up your kitchen with Eiffel Chairs (£190) from The Conran Shop and this kitsch Yellow & Cream Retro Telephone (£63.62) from Heal’s. It’s a case of the brighter the better, but stick to furniture and accessories – don’t paint your walls in these electric shades. Overusing bright yellow makes ‘babies cry and grown-ups lose their tempers’ and hurts our eyes, says designer Kathy Barto of KMB Designs.

6. What does yellow clash with?

Be careful when pairing yellow with other colours. It looks dicey alongside reds and purples and when next to black, it runs the risk of looking like a building site. Teaming it with grey, however, adds a soft sophistication to the brighter hue. This Bold Spot Print Cushion (£25) from Marks & Spencer is very chic and will bring a spot of colour to your sofa.

7. Colour of change and creativity

Michelle Obama wore yellow for the Presidential Inauguration Ceremony earlier this year. The hue symbolizes new life, hope and change; she must have been confident about the result! Follow in the First Lady’s footsteps and bring optimism into your surrounding – drink to happy days with this Process yellow Pantone mug (£7.75) from John Lewis. ‘Yellow is a great colour to have fun with whilst decorating and can add freshness to your home with a vibrant energy and optimism’ says Anderson.

8. Create a sunny glow with lighting

Embrace the trend with a simple light shade. A yellow shade will fill the room with sunshine, like this Bright Yellow Drum Shade (£40) from Heal’s. Yellow ‘can make any area warm and inviting’ says Stephanie Hoppen. So expect your friends round more often.

9. Get motivated with colour help

It’s often underestimated how much colour affects our mood. ‘Yellow stimulates the brain and makes people open-minded, decisive and alert. It helps concentration and is therefore a good colour to use in rooms where you work or think’, explains Hoppen. Deck out your home office with this Caroline Yellow Glass Table Lamp (£97.87) from Heal’s and India Yellow Clock (£30) from Not on the High Street, and you’ll be the model worker.

10. Yellow brings out the fun in interiors

‘Whether it be a statement piece of furniture or a funky accessory, yellow is sure to lift any room and give it a new lease of life for Spring’ says Gillian Anderson, Trading Director at Heal’s. You can’t help but smile when you catch sight of this Puddle Table (£150) from Susan Bradley. Life is for laughing, after all.

Interior Wood Doors Add To The Beauty of Your Home

As soon as you enter a room, the first thing that catches your attention is the color of the wall. Even before that, what actually catches your attention is the door hardware like bolts, hinges, locks etc. The door is just a facade which reflects what is inside. Different raw materials are also used for different doors. The front gates are made of wrought iron, so that they are sturdy and long lasting. The interior doors are fancy wooden doors which are made of pinewood, teakwood, oak, mahogany, maple woods etc. The various styles of doors also give a unique look and feel.

Interior wood doors look best when they are made of quality wood and that too with an exquisite carving. The wooden doors ensure that the room looks grand and appealing to the eyes of everybody. Also it has to be strong and durable to withstand all weather conditions. A fragile door will not serve the purpose of the door. If a plywood door is used as the main door, not only will it show a lack of taste but also be unsafe for the people living in the house. You don’t want burglars to break in the door and flee with your valuables. A hard door with appropriate hinges and bolts will keep of thugs and miscreants. It will also be beneficial if you install a security alarm on the door.

Along with a durable interior door, it is also important to fix original and good quality door hardware including good quality locksets, levers, knobs etc. We might just not notice but as small as hinges and other fittings have changed over time. In case of heavy doors, a heavier and stronger hinge has to be used. On the other hand, in case of interior doors, not so heavy hinges can be used. Contact your sales consultant for a better understanding of what type of hinges to be used and for what type of door. Choose from very many designs available in the market to give a unique and innovative upgrade to your home.

In case you are wondering that these high quality doors will be way above your budget, it is not so. Interior wood doors now come in various price ranges, so that everyone can get a taste of the best. These are made available to you in a wide array of choices to suit every taste and budget. In case of bulk orders, you can avail free shipping facility. So this lessens your worries of how to get the newly made doors at your doorstep without taking much pain. Order from architectural moldings to custom made exquisite ornamental doors, do not look any further. These well made doors will also ensure that they are durable and protected from termites and ants and fungi. When you put so much thought on the colors of the walls of the types of furniture in the room, also ensure that you get the best quality doors and windows which will last you a lifetime with no worries of replacement any time soon.

Home Interior Decoration Ideas

Interior decorations are often associated with mere interior embellishments. It is difficult to bestow one particular meaning to this art. Renovations can also include rebuilding something within a home as part of interiors. On a practical note, the concept of interior decorations develops from the spirit of individual taste and likings. You can always rely on professional help, provided the person is willing to do her job after a thorough research into your unique taste and lifestyle.

There are so many ways to go about it. Planning in advance will help you with many factors, including your budget and practicality. If you plan on hiring an Interior Decorator, make sure he spends time with you and your family, it is important to make him understand your specific preferences (colors, dislikes, etc). If you plan to do it yourself, it can be one of the most rewarding experiences. After all, you understand your home the best. But, as it quite often happens, you can get lost in the process, so the first step would be planning. Write down the plan, and start with a realistic budget, following are some of the important questions you can ask yourself before you start,

You can make columns with figures once you have estimated the basics,

  • How much are you willing to spend (read BUDGET)?
  • Do you want to start with a room or include the entire house?
  • Which is the room you would like to start with?
  • What is each room used for? Who is going to use the rooms?
  • What is the theme you have in mind? Anything specific?
  • Would you like to change the wall color/paper?
  • Do you prefer low-maintenance interiors or you can do with a high-maintenance décor?
  • Do you have kids? Pets?  Do you want to inculcate any special care or theme for them?
  • Does your budget include new furniture? (Make a list of it)
  • Do you plan to use stuff at home to create your own lamps, hangings etc.?
  • What needs to be changed? Work on things you really want to change, and make a separate ‘Wish List’ for dream things.
  • Concentrate on the ‘Do’ list first.

Although basic, the answer to the above questions will bring the real picture in front of your eyes. This will help you in practically estimating the cost, and stirring your plan in the right direction. When you are through with the plan, start with a room by measuring its area. And write in front of it the things you will be doing—wall paint/paper; change side tables, add lamp, do panels, change rugs, and so on. After surveying each room (or just a room incase you wish to start with one), and practically jotting down things to be done, now tally this list with your original list(anything from the wish list peeping out?).

Now work on details like the wall color schemes or wall paper, try to use a basic color for all rooms for it will help in keeping the uniformity of your home intact (and costs down), and you can work on different combos with it. For wallpapers, you can use the same background color and work on the print and patterns. A combo of wall paint and paper also looks great with a little thought. You can play with colors on the rugs, curtains and lighting. If modern colors appeal to you, you can work in a combination of colors (complimentary) that go with your furniture and curtains. That should help you with getting started…all the best!
